BBC star presenter Nick Robinson pokes fun at Meghan Markle on Today programme

BBC Radio Four’s Today presenter Nick Robinson appeared to poke fun at Meghan Markle during Monday morning’s live show.

Explaining that celebrities including American TV host Gayle King and American pop star Katy Perry were leading the space trip with Jeff Bezos’s rocket company Blue Origin, the veteran Radio Four journalist said: ‘Surely Meghan Markle’s got to be on the next one [rocket].’

On finding out that Ms King was a friend of the Duchess of Sussex, 43, Robinson said: ‘Ah, it’s only a matter of time.’

Robinson was laughing with his co-host Johnny Diamond and guests Professor Catherine Heymans, astronomer royal for Scotland, and Kate Maltby, columnist and critic, who discussed ‘What’s the point?’ of the space exhibition.

The BBC presenter seemed to be taking a dig at Meghan’s penchant for trying new projects. She has recently been flogging £20 jars of jam which has received much backlash.

Irish TV and radio presenter Vogue Williams last month tore into the Duchess of Sussex, despite her connections to the Royal Family as her husband, Spencer Matthews, is brother-in-law to the Princess of Wales’s sister, Pippa.

Vogue, 39, called out Meghan’s new Netflix show, With Love, Meghan and said: ‘I saw a bit where she was making her kids a rainbow platter of fruit.

First of all, I thought I was doing well mixing Rice Krispies and Cheerios – like, you can have two cereals in one! And she’s there like… did you see the rainbow [platter]? I personally like that, but who does that?’

Vogue was dishing out her views on the former Suits star’s Netflix series on a new episode of her podcast, My Therapist Ghosted Me, at one point co-host Joanne McNally said of Meghan’s outfit: ‘I can’t bear a jumper round the shoulders,’ to which Vogue responded, laughing: ‘Yeah, yeah – it’s disgusting.’

Katherine Ryan publicly laid into Meghan – after previously defending her – in the wake of her new Netflix series.

‘I liked Meghan Markle. I was rooting for Meghan Markle… though she is very Hollywood – even for me – and I don’t like that in people,’ she admitted.

‘I see now, and maybe it’s just the projects she’s choosing, it does feel like she has lied about whether she knew who Prince Harry was, and these details about her childhood change and don’t add up.’

Robinson’s comments come as the Mail on Sunday revealed that Robinson, 61, had fallen out with the co-presenter, Emma Barnett, who lodged a complaint about him and called him ‘overbearing’.

Last month, it was reported that the two journalists had not appeared together on the show for 90 days, sparking rumours of ‘clashing egos’ and making life difficult for the producers.

Insiders said the matter was resolved with no action taken and there had been no suggestion Nick had done anything wrong.

They blamed the ‘inevitable stresses and strains caused by the pairing of two strong characters’ and said the pair had experienced the sort of misunderstanding common between colleagues – but that in this case it had been blown out of proportion.

One source said: ‘Emma made a complaint about Nick,’ adding that tensions have persisted so much that they ‘can’t be on together as she finds him overbearing’.

However, other sources at the BBC played down the claims and denied there had been any ‘formal’ complaint.
